Within Internews International our Rwandan office is part of Internews Europe (IEU), a non-profit organization established in 1995, and indigenously follows its mission. IEU’s mission is to reinforce the capacity of the world’s media so as to give each person the necessary information, the possibility to connect and the means to have their voice be heard. IEU’s activities are based on the conviction that broad access to diverse and accurate information is an essential cornerstone of a free and open society, and it is guided by the vision that open, free media - vibrant, pluralistic, independent, indigenous media that help stabilize civil society - can and should exist in every nation. IEU strives to achieve this vision through capacity-building partnerships with indigenous media outlets and NGOs. The support IEU brings to local media involve a wide range of activities: training of media professionals, equipment grants, creation of innovative local and international media, development of online citizen journalism platforms, expertise on media and internet-related policy and legislative issues, exchange of media programming. Other than in Rwanda, IEU has worked in over 70 countries, training on average 9000 media professionals and producing about 5600 hours of television and radio programming that reach an estimated audience of 800 million people annually.
